In 2012 a Report to the President entitled Engage to Excel: Producing one million Additional College Graduates with Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics was released. The report identified a requirement for approximately one million more STEM professionals than the U.S. will produce at the current rate over the next decade. STEM jobs are those like doctors, nurses, scientists, computer engineers, and cybersecurity professionals. What an opportunity to slingshot Young Black Males (YBM) forward with a strategic approach to change. If this is not a call to action for the Black community I don’t know what is or what will be.
The report continued that in order for America to remain dominant in science and technology we need to increase students receiving STEM degrees by 34% annually over the current rate. So, what are we waiting for? Helping YBMs meet this requirement is almost sure to increase homeownership, a reduction in crime, and more educated YBMs. If we need to hang a carrot of one day receiving a great salary out in front of YBMs, like a mouse in a lab, just do it. It is clear that modern society has conditioned our YBMs to chase the cheddar so why not drive them to run towards obtainable dollars.
Ultimately, we can’t await a new program to unlock funding that is specifically targeted to YBMs. The wait will assure the loss of several more generations timing out and the lock down of a million more brothers. This screams to me that as a community we can change the historical drag and the futures of YBMs in a 10 year period. This excites me because it would mean we have come full circle, a revolution, dating back to when we built the pyramids. It would validate the struggles since we built the first societies. It would honor groups of hardworking and dynamic engineers that used their minimal available resources to grow the world. They performed the impossible by creating a future that left the nonbelievers in disbelief.
Pushing YBMs towards STEM education is no doubt good for the nation and helps officials meet their requirements.
